Restoring furniture, like no other vocation, incorporates the past, present and future.

John VerHines likes to say, “you have got to understand the past—the builder’s original idea—then you can restore furniture in the present and preserve it for the future.” So, it makes sense that in order to grasp what a multi-generational restoration firm like Gramco Furniture is all about, you must start with the builder.

William Verhines started the company in 1964. Yet, to truly tell Gramco’s story, you have to start with the man himself.
 
Born in 1910, Verhines came from the farms of Vienna, Illinois to get his teaching certificate at Carbondale College. Though he was never a faculty member at any school or university, Bill would be a “teacher” the rest of his life, particularly in his business career.

Bill followed the trail of manufacturing jobs available during World War II up to Detroit, Michigan. After working for local plants, he opened up his own manufacturing operation, The Dearborn Thread Rolling Company, in the 1950s. Eventually setting up shop in Romulus, Michigan, The Dearborn Thread Rolling made parts for the Big Three (Chrysler, Ford, GM)—creating a nice niche for itself in post-WWII middle America.
 
For most who survived the Great Depression, the story might have ended quite happily there. Yet fate dealt Bill a fortunate hand that would change the course of his life and that of generations to follow.
